Project/Unit description/Expedition:
This first lesson focuses on introducing our unit topic of self-expression through the experimentation with different mediums.
This project will consist of creating a sketchbook cover that is personal and expresses each individual student. Students will be given the opportunity to explore different mediums while creating their covers.

Art and the creative process allows for students to express and communicate personal connections and interests.
Inquiry/Learning target:
Students will be able to create a sketchbook cover and puzzle piece that exhibit personal expression and storytelling.

Students will brainstorm subject matter that will help them communicate who they are as an individual. Students will discuss similarities and differences that they see in their peer's artwork.

Exploration of art materials including markers, colored pencils, oil pastels, and watercolors.
Literacy Focus: Vocabulary: subject matter, planning, ideation; discussion of the similarities and differences in each of the sketchbooks and puzzle pieces. Discussion about why the subject matter students chose expresses their individuality.
