Project Description/Expedition:
20 years into the future, you are one of the top builders in the world! You are asked to build a new form of transportation. You have to come up with a new idea, this means that you can combine features of transportation that are already invented or completely invent a new one! We will use found-objects to show your new invention. The future of moving across the town depends on you!
Essential Understanding:
Materials and stylistic decisions display artist intention that portray movement and creative modes for transportation
Understanding of motion and historical background will ignite creative thinking and story telling.
Inquiry/Learning target:
Students will be able to create transportation out of found-object materials.
Key Concept(s):
Motion
Transportation
Found-Objects
Skill(s):
Students will learn how to assemble found-object materials.
Students will understand elements of transportation.
Art Focus:
Students will be exploring how to create a found-object sculptures.
Literacy Focus:
Vocabulary: three-dimensional, found-objects,transportation .
Literacy Integration: Verbalization of process.
Some photos from the experience...
One student sketches out his ideas before he starts to create. After drawing for a while, he decides to just go for it and grab a huge pile of things. He was not really sure what he was going to create, but reacted off of what the objects were and how they could be assembled. In the end, he did not use any of the materials in this pile, but at least he explored the medium for a while!

Many of the students chose to work with hair curlers because of their shape and texture. This student created a rocket ship and was using the curlers at the exhausts . She tried to see if pastel would appear while on the plastic bottle, which it did not, but that helped her think of other ways that she could add color to her creation.
|
This student reacted to a lot of different materials. He created a flying house by taping together four squares of foam. To make it some form of transportation, he added some engines and exhausts made out of hair curlers and added the effect of fire coming out of them with party noise makers. To add a little bit of style, he put a spider on his house.
|
This student wanted to create a flying birthday cake. She used party noise makers for her candles, a dish scrubber for her frosting, foam for her cake, and egg cartons for her wings. When she had issues figuring out how she could add the wings to the cake, she decided to add the black ice tray as a support to carry the cake and attatch the wings.

To assess student understanding of transportation, we went outside to show how objects move. Some students showed their objects floating around because they are in space, some gained momentum and went really fast! Each student demonstrated their understanding of movement. Some even added sound effects to add emphasis to the motion.
