Planning and Ideation
This student sketched mango ice cream as what makes him happy. When describing why this image made him happy, he talked about how mango is his favorite flavor and him and his family got to eat a lot of ice cream during the summer time. In the drawing, the student incorporates literacy to explain to viewers what his drawing is of. At the bottom left corner, he drew himself with a smile to inform viewers that this is a happy drawing.

These three images show how one student evolved one concept into her final print. In the class discussion, she talked about how she was really happy when she got her pony. During the sketching and ideation period, she began to draw her pony and thought about the setting that the pony would be found in. During centers, she continued with her concept and transferred her sketched ideas onto the styrofoam plate. There were several students who used their sketchbooks as a way to plan ideas on what made them happy so they had clear concise ideas by the time they went to the printmaking centers.

Styrofoam Relief Printmaking
This student drew a character with that is looking into beams of light. Although it is not a memory from a time he was happy, he said that he thought beams of light are beautiful, and beautiful things make him happy. While he was funny, he thought it would be really funny to make the person have eyes like a fly, so he drew that. He focused more on funny and beautiful things, but those make him happy, so it was a unique understanding and he came up with interesting work!

This student loves trains. His happy memory was from when he and his family went to see the train in Georgetown. When he was explaining this, he described things like speed, the sounds it was making, and what the train looked like. He had a lot of detail in his story. When he went to print, he wanted to use multiple colors to show the background, the train, and the sky. By the time he went to print, the ink was all dry which was very frustrating, but he tried again and came out with a successful print.

This image shows a the inking station. Towards the end of class, many people reacted to the student who used three different colors for his train print. They wanted to experiment using multiple colors too and ended up using similar designs. It was great to see the collaboration among students and see how one student's work can inspire many others.
